About Mauna Kea Golf Course

The legendary Mauna Kea Golf Course overlooks one of the world’s most beautiful beaches on the west shore of Hawaii’s Big Island. Now celebrating 50 years, the course opened in 1964 as the unique creation of the great golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones Sr. It gained world-wide fame as the site of a memorable televised match among golf’s “Big 3:” Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. In 2008, Mr. Jones’ son, Rees Jones, brought his father’s original layout into the 21st century with a careful and creative renovation. The enduring ocean-front layout was preserved while the challenge and playability were enhanced, insuring that Mauna Kea would rank among the world’s greatest golf courses for decades to come.
